King James by Thistle - Edimburgo

The hotel was easy to find with or without GPS, good location. Car parking available, if somewhat limited. Check-in computer broken, we were told 20 minutes and to have a drink in the bar, but it was 1 hour before they decided to manually check us in. The girls were very helpful, apologetic, assigned our 2 rooms. First room key card would not work (later found out it was already occupied), second key card got us into the room, to find someone else's belongings already in the room. Back down 4 floors to be reassigned new rooms. Beds kingsized, comfortable. No airconditioning that we could adjust within the room, but somehow comfortable with ceiling fan. Phone intermittently not working, no ice bucket. Bathroom just about clean, shower power weak. Only 1 set towels in bathroom, 2nd set in plastic wrapper in wardrobe, dusty-smelling but clean. Porters desk in lobby, but no porter to help with luggage or concierge-type questions. No breakfast with our package, a bit mean. Restaurant menu looked acceptable, but we ate out all meals. Hotel connected on 3rd floor to shopping centre, great if you want modern retail therapy.

Booked to stay Friday 4/9/09, but no hot water, no heating and disgraceful/arrogant attitude of staff forced us to leave within hours of arrival. My husband had to chase a man out of our room who was creeping about, unannounced while we were sleeping. Were later told this was maintenance. Hours of complaints regarding the lack of hot water were repeatedly ignored until 9.30pm at night when they then offered a room switch. Accusations of smoking in the room were the final straw. Happily drove home through the night rather than endure a night in this hotel. Will NEVER use this hotel or company again.

Do not expect this to be a Hilton. This is a clean hotel with all the basics covered. The staff was very helpful with a little problem we faced.

Just a basic standard hotel with basic standard room - I think I paid for the location and the name. Check in staff were not friendly but two staff I met in the bar were.

If you do not have a car, it is within walking distance (with suitcases) of train station and airport bus. All main bus lines are on the same street or around the corner. Mall is next to hotel, and there are many shops and restaurants as well, from upscale to affordable. We arrived early in the morning and they gave us a room right away, ell before check in time. Room very quiet, even if on a main street. No noise at all!!! kind of a bummer because we overslept.... thinking traffic would wake us up.

Great spot, close to everything. I'm from Los Angeles, even saw the Lakers win the NBAS title at 4 am on the flat screen in the room!

This hotel was very clean and modern. The location was pretty good, close to almost everything. It was connected to a shopping mall which we loved because you could get items at the drug store, go for lunch or coffee, there was a post office there, as well as lots of great stores. One day there was a bagpiper outside the hotel main entrance which I found wonderful. The staff could have been a little friendlier, but the comfort of the hotel made up for that. The restaurant food is good, however, watch out for the low tea candles in the bar if you are having dinner there, the flame lit one of our napkins on fire -- what excitement and danger! We would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is very good overall and the location is excellent with just a 3 minutes walk to Edinburgh Waverly train station. It's right next to John Lewis and there are many other boutiques and shops nearby as it's next door to Princess Street ( the main shopping area of Edinburgh). The room was very nice and quite with a HUGE bed.The bathroom was a bit on the small side but we did not really mind that. Overall a very nice experience and I would definitely stay there again.

No doorman, concierge or even front desk people around all the time (poor security) Drunks partying and fighting in the hallway at 2 am. It was straight out of the movie "trainspotting" Room was smaller than a standard cruise ship room

We were traveling through Edinburgh and decided to try the King James. The hotel doesn't have anything outstanding.....it's just a hotel with a good location. The building is very modern with shops and available parking. However, after walking around we saw lots of hotels in other parts of the city that were in older, more interesting buildings. Next time, we'll try something else

Everything was ok with this hotel, except that Saturday night crowds on the street (there was a club across the street) partied quite loudly until 6 a.m. Sunday morning. We arrived from the US on Saturday morning (after a sleepless, all night plane ride) and spent the day sightseeing. By night time we were dead, but as tired as we were, we were wakened repeatedly. Next time we'll choose a, hopefully, quieter place.

Good value for money in a modern hotel. Good location in the city centre.

This is hotel is a bit misleading, although has parking, parking is limited and on 3 visits has never been made available to me. It is located next door to an NCP car park which it does NOT have preferential rates at, so one overnight stay, less than 14 hours was £19.00 (April 09), it does have preferential rates at a hotel across a very busy road with a walk-over, but a bit of a hike with suitcases. Even at the NCP I ended up in the middle of a very busy shopping centre, the entrance door from this way was steps up to the hotel then down to reception - not ideal with a v heavy suitcase. As a single traveller, first room I was allocate did not have a bathroom only a shower room, very small and no natural light, I complained and was offered a v pleasant twin room with a bath and a window overlooking the main street, which made things so much more bearable. Without the room change I would not be writing a very favourable report at all.

Lovely hotel, location could not be more central, very clean, lovely staff, comfortable room and not very noisy considering it's location on a very busy street. Would highly recomend this hotel, you will not regret it!

This hotel is really handy, it is a very short walk from where last stop on airport bus. Its is very close to all the main shops and attractions. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent. The room was clean and had everything necessary. My only complaint is that the bed was very uncomfortable. It would have needed a new mattress! Apart from this it was a great place to stay and good value for money.

Booked a last min deal and was pretty pleased. Price and location could not be better, right in centre of Edinburgh. Our booking didn't include breakfast and we were given a twin bed but room was clean and comfortable. Hotel was re-painting some rooms on our floor but no real disruption.

Very clean, condition not new but more than adequate, very friendly staff, and very convenient location. I would recommend it highly.

this cant be thistle hotel! - its some old hotel with old heating system,,,my room was dead cold and I had to phone room service to turn it on...and it was so bad...room was congested, small, bathroom no way upto a 2 star hotel standard...leave 4 star...NOT RECOMMENDED,..dont go on the label...its not thistle!!! Parking extra...15 pounds for the night...even if you park it outside ur hotel...its not standard...depends on who they can extract it from...tired hotel n staff!

The location of this hotel is ideal, the staff were very friendly and the room itself was lovely. although we only stayed for 1 night I would highly recommend this hotel in future to anyone planning a stay in Edinburgh.

The noise level in the rooms facing the street is noticeable all day and night.

Very nice hotel, very centrally located in a beautiful city. Unfortunately designed to clash with the surrounding architecture. Staff were very helpfull and polite and the hotel facilities were good but we we're looking for a wedding reception venue and saw some gorgeous hotels during our search so unfortunatley the King James suffered by comparison. This is a hotel suitable for a short stay.

Hotel was ideaslly placed for theatre, shopping and sightseeing. The staff were friendly and efficient, room was very comfortable and clean.

Easy to find, close to Princess Street, Old Town and the main railway station. Though the hotel itself was very dated, room was clean but very noisy from being located on a main road, bathroom door didn't shut. Also double bed was made of two single mattresses put together.

We were only staying for a couple of days in Edinburgh 22-24 jan 09 and wanted somewhere near the train station and reasonably priced. We weren't disappointed, it was a 5 minute walk from the station and got a great deal too. Rooms were clean and all the staff were friendly, we didn't realise there was a bar on the 3rd floor until the 2nd day but we had one or two in there and the guy behind the bar was really helpful and friendly, was a bit cold in there though! We had breakfast by room service on the 2nd day also, and it was lovely. However tell reception as early as possible and you can get a pre booked discount and its a good saving as its a bit pricey at the normal price, as they usually are. On leaving we asked if we could leave our luggage as we weren't catching our train till later in the afternoon and that wasn't a problem either.Overall I couldn't fault it and would definately return.

Room was clean and tidy -had booked a double but received a twin which comprised of 2 VERY small single beds -have not slept in a bed that small since I was a child!!

I liked it very much, liked the entrance of the Hotel, the welcoming smile of the receptionist, made the check in before 2:00 pm, the room was so clean & tidy ;-))

the location of the hotel is great. it is only 200 meters away from the waverly station. The room is clean. would recommend this hotel.

This hotel has a fantastic location situated close to Edinburgh Castle and shopping centre and was generally an enjoyable stay. Customer service left something to be desired, lack of hotel car parking was also frustrating plus double bed was two singles pushed together that were of different heights. Dinner was also unimpressive and breakfast over-priced but despite these complaints which could easily be overlooked, the hotel was very nice and would recommend it.

This hotel is in a great location for exploring Edinburgh. 5 minutes walk and you're Princes Street. Be warned, there is no real carpark, you have to park across the street in the NCP multi-storey. Convenient enough so long as it's not raining! Great for train travellers though. Waverely Station is just around the corner from Leith St. The hotel itself was modern, clean and very comfortable. Staff were very helpful too. Breakfast was typical hotel `help-yourself' style. Ok if you get the fresh stuff but slim pickings if you get there at the wrong time. We didn't have the evening meal so can't comment. Overall, we would definitely stay again and recommend to others. Reasonable price, great location.

On a leisure trip to Edinburgh for an overnight stay and visit to the Playhouse Theatre, we booked this hotel purely out of exasperation of not being able to find accommodation within our budget. The Thistle turned out to be better than we expected. Literally a five minute walk from Waverley Station and St. James Shopping Centre, where the shopping is excellent. Our room wasn't ready on arrival, but when we got to our room it was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for a short stay. The added bonus for us is the hotel is only a five minute walk from the Playhouse, which was the main reason for our visit.

We stayed one night as an anniversary break.The only negative remark I would make related to check-in.We arrived at2pm as website advised this was check-in time,to be told that our double room was not ready.We were offered a twin room which we accepted - no apology was offered or upgrade.The room was very clean and well maintained but in general the hotel lacked atmosphere and the reception staff seemed ambivalent to our custom.The hotel was generally clean and tidy and has a great location though traffic noise could be offputting to some guests.Abit disappointed

We arrived very early, too early to check in. We were told about local shopping and different places to eat while waiting for our rooms and was able to leave our luggage. The hotel was clean, quiet and the staff was very accommodating. And I would stay there again.

The card key kept demagnetizing so we would get to our room only to have to go back down six stories to have it re-encoded. Parking was a painful 15 pounds per night. The shower barely had enough pressure. Other than that we were very grateful for a last minute place during the festival. Goodness knows we paid for the privilege, but the hotel was so well situated that we didn't mind.

The map may indicate otherwise, but it is REALLY a short walk to the hotel from Waverley Station (if you manage to exit correctly at Princes Street). I was also impressed by the pristine condition of the room. If you are looking for a mid-budget hotel - this one is as good as it gets. Note that it's about 5-8 mins walk to the High Street though.

solid hotel. really close to everything. great price. really sharp set up with everything needed for the traveler who's interested in having a comfy sleep then getting out to explore the city. would definitely go back.

A group of friends stayed here and enjoyed it. Great location, comfortable rooms, very reasonable price. I would definitely book it again, if we are holding another get-together in Edinburgh. The only down-side was the price of the breakfast, apparently £12 - better to go somewhere nice off George Street and get breakfast.
