Room was very comfortable for it's rate nice artwork and "theme". I like the lobby's look and the staff was pleasant on checking-in. Only problem tv remote did not work. Bathroom was clean and well prepared, as well as the bed prepared properly. Overall, I would stay here again. Thank-you for helping me enjoy the Labor Day weekend.

I like funky, but clean, so this fit the bill. Great location. Friendly helpful staff.

Really funky, but in a cute way. Crazy decorating. The poor man's Gramercy Park Hotel. Room was small but clean and quiet. Great location.

The Webpage photo of the front of the hotel is stylized. I'm guessing that that is what the hotel is imagined as when complete. It is a work in progress and can only be considered 'performance art meets hotel'. The rooms are what I (West Coast) would imagine as NYC tenement style rooms complete with window AC and cast iron steam heaters. The staff was great and the artwork throughout the hotel added to the flavor. Apparently there are live performances in the curtained off area adjacent to the foyer. That wasn't true the 2 days I was there. The room TV has videos of what is presumably local rock, jazz, spoken word and even burlesque performances. If you are looking for inexpensive, clean, quirky and well located, The Gershwin is for you. If you want Holiday Inn, it isn't..

Booked the hotel at last minute without many options left. Overall maintainance and quality of room did NOT met expectations (which weren't high). Air condition equipment made a hell of a noice when on, windows which stayed open because of window frame was either rotten or crooked. The bed was awful and small to American standard. All the noice from the street and corridor travelled to room. I do NOT recommend this hotel to anyone, not even to my worst enemy! You can get a much better hotel with same prize! If booked early enough it's possible to get e.c. room from Hilton with only 15$ more expensive per person per night - as we had. And that money is worth every penny!

water temp in the shower ranged from icy to scalding in the course of a wash DO NOT get a rollaway - the frame was zero support (would have slept in a "u" shape), had wide spaced zig zag wires, not coils, a bar across the middle that hit right at the hip or waist, and the mattress was old, ripped and basically just an long air filled cushion (remember summer camp?) that deflated to 1" when you lay down on it - every wire and bar was plain to feel. I would have asked for another one but figured I would have gotten another one of the same. We put the bed mattress on the floor and the cot mattress on the box frame, at least got some back support. The room was clean, the staff was helpful with directions, the location was good for us.

The hotel was clean, and very pleasant to stay in. Staff were friendly and helpful. Had to pay an extra $20 for the rollaway bed, but other than that, no complaints at all.

First time staying in NY. The hotel looks cool. The staff is friendly. The rooms are clean, artsy, and relatively comfortable. Overall, there is a good feeling about everything that this hotel offers. Didn't stay in the room much, but it seemed quiet...the only noise came from the open window.

The hotel is great ,it has a artsy feeling to it.The location is centrally located to Bus and subway,located in the center of manhatten.

The overall beauty of the exterior of the building was awesome. However, the hostel was filthy, no towels and appeared unsafe. And, the company over-booked the room. So, I had to cancel reservation. But, thanks to hotel.com, I was able to locate a better hotel at the Ramada Inn in Queens, NY.

I am a seasoned traveler and I highly recommend Gershwin Hotel to everybody who travels on a budget.Location is great--close to Empire Building,5th Ave and down town in general.Post office is in a couple blocks away and there is a very nice and cheap place to eat nearby the hotel.Hotel is very clean and quality of linens and towels is very good.Staff is very,very nice,helpful and friendly.Interior is very simple,but it has a special charm and character in it.If you are looking for something affordable,simple,clean and people friendly and down town,book this hotel now.I will sure come back again and again.

I felt like I was sleeping in a hammock instead of a bed. The lobby was very cool, but there was no life to the hotel. I can deal with the small room, but the mattress sagged way too much and the immediate neighborhood was too midtown business for me.

Would definitely recommend staying here!

The hotel was conveniently located near my daytime destination and my reservation was in place. The room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Our wake-up call was prompt and the bathroom was well equiped and there was plenty of hot water. The rooms aren't large but, they are clean and comfortable.

For what it was, the Gershwin was worth every penny. They are located just blocks from the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Plaza, and Times Square/42nd St. If you want to go anywhere else, they're close to the subways. The staff is friendly and so are most of the guests. If you're looking for cleanliness, I would suggest a single room as opposed to their 10-bed dorm-style rooms. As a weekend rambling man, it was perfect for me.

The location and unique environment of the hotel is a nice touch.

Two colloge students in NYC for weekend-hotel is right around the corner from the Empire State Building and in walking distance to all the great sights. Very cool art and nice vibe in the hotel-friendly and helpful staff-good for those on a budget!! :)

When you choose a bunk room at the Gershwin Hotel it's really not for comfort and cleanliness (but I don't say it's a trash..., the reception floor is clean); but more for its position in NYC, close to the Empire State Building and quite from Time Square. 10 per Bunk Room, it is their choice but it's too many, 8 or 6 should be better. Bathroom are really small but when you are in NYC for fun you don't spend 10h in your Bathroom... Bunk room are quite cold so it's better to come with your sleeping bag. Now I don't know how look individual rooms certainly better

Fantastic location, the room was basic, but comfortable, with all necessary amenities. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Went to New York for my 21st b-day. New york was awesome, hotel was expensive i guess for the location more than anything else. Wasn't overlly impressed!

Having read some of the reviews of this hotel, we were a bit worried about what we would find, but the hotel was pretty good for the money. Full of character, v comfy bed and excellent location a short walk from the Empire State and 2x 28th St subway stations. OK it wasn't spotless and the plumbing was a bit erratic, but it didn't spoil our stay in any way.

I needed something affordable for one night in NYC and therefore chose the dorm room of the Gershwin Hotel. Clean room, clean (shared) bathroom, very nice desk personnel, great location! Was a little bit strange to sleep with people in a room you see for the first time that night, but quite some interesting conversation developed out of this fact. The only thing that was hard for me: the night. I do not have a light sleep but with 10 people in a room, someone is always snoring, searching something, moving or putting on the light. This is to be expected before of course and cannot be said to be a negative point of the hotel. But I would either recommend some good hearing protection for the night or some heavy alcohol use, so that your sleep is undisturbable:) Good hotel over all!

We selected the hotel for its position right in the centre of New York and it didn't disapoint. We could walk to all the places we wished to see as we were just off 5th Ave near to the Empire State building

I greately appresiated the front desk staff friendlyness and hospitality. I enjoyed the opportunity of listening to live music in the hotel lobbie but i wiched it was included as a benefit of staying in the hotel insted there was a cover sharge. not complaining in regards to this just suggesting. I loved the hip and artistic element of the hotel i only wich i had more time to look around the building. For my first stay in a hostel environment i felt safe and secure. Thank you so very much!

This hotel is located in a central point for you to be able to walk or take the subway to all the popular attractions. Nothing spectacular, but if you plan on being out and about the entire day, this hotel is perfectly fine for a place to sleep and shower.

The hotel was very retro, very cool. I was pleased because I was upgraded to a lovely suite, which consisted of 2 rooms. However, the staff were extraordinarily unprofessional. It began during check-in, when the two individuals behind the counter were unattentive and engaged in conversation with each other, rather than attending to the customers. They took their sweet time, and were not friendly (especially one heavy set woman). I think because part of the hotel is a hostel the employees are a bit lax, but there should be a standard of professionalism maintained regardless. Then, when I went upstairs to shower, I noticed that there was no conditioner, only a large re-fillable bottle of shampoo, and no toothbrush or toothpaste. I called downstairs to inquire about getting some conditioner, and again the heavy set woman was rude but said she would send someone up. I answered the door to a man holding a large shampoo re-fill, and said - very politely- that i actually wanted conditioner, to which he said you have to pay. I thought he meant the hotel has toiletries for sale, and asked to buy some. He got very frustraed with me and kept yelling you have to pay, you have to pay. I said I understood this and wanted to pay for some. Finally, after a few angry outbursts, he said you have to pay down the street. He meant at the convenience store. I soon learned that they did not even carry toothbrushes or toothpaste in the hotel. I have never heard of a hotel that does not provide toiletries, gratuitous or otherwise, and was appalled at the attitude of the staff.

We loved the Gershwin. Its location is ideal for everything we wanted to do, and we loved the funky atmosphere. (Plus, Its only 2 block from the famous shake shack in Madison Square Park... amazing shakes and burgers are a nice break for tired travelers.) There is art everywhere, including the guest rooms. The shower was a bit of a challenge to get the right temperature, but the room was clean, bright and comfortable. We plan to stay there on future trips.

There was some confusion during the checkin process - was put into the wrong room. I was told the desk clerk was new. Staff was very helpful and really tried to accomodate every request or concern. The room I stayed in the 1st night had plumbing problems (the toilet drain pipe from the floor above was leaking into our bathroom. Location is perfect.

The hotel was ok. It was a little on the pricey side for the size of the room. But it was clean and unique hotel. The concierge service was less than desirable. They had posted hours for someone to be at the desk, but they never seemed to be there.

The website is absolutely charming and most of the promises made are delivered: artwork appears in all manner of guises and the vibe in the lobby is decidedly bohemian. For a business traveler looking for a bargain, I was pleased to see most basic amenities: wireless access, blowdryer, ironing board -- all in good condition. Did miss a complimentary shower cap though, and the pampered traveler who expects lots of fringe service will be advised to find one of the chains for double the price. Other than the air conditioning unit which was pitched a little too 'cold' for a green world and a lock that stuck a few times, I was satisfied with my stay. The staff, by the way, were always courteous and helpful and actually really kinda cool! So who am I recommending this to? My young and adventureous nieces who would find congenial spirits in the largely European college-age clientele.

Great location! The night staff is friendlier than the day staff but it's all good! The random roommates were quite respectful- most were European visitors. I'd stay again if I'm ever in NYC. Much love- T.N. :)

The rate of the hotel is good. The location is also convenient for you to go to the 5th Ave, Times square, for any sightseeing...It would be much better to have personal lockers in the bunker rooms.
