Mercure Porto Centro - Oporto

If the Pestana on the waterside is a little too expensive the Mercure Porto Centro is a very reasonable alternative. Didn't eat here, except for breakfast, much better down at the waterside or for a special treat try the restaurant at Taylors lodge.

VERY convenient to bus station (can see it from the exit) and near the waterfront and port houses (5-10 EUR taxi ride). WiFi is not free, but that seems to be the trend throughout much of Portugal. Room is very simple, but you should be out and about ... not in the room.

The outside of the Hotel is not particularly prepossessing. It is rather hidden away in a corner of the square. However, service is very good, and front-office staff very helpful. The location is excellent for easy access to most parts of the City. The cost was very reasonable for the class of hotel.

They make you think the breakfast is free but they ask you when you check out how many mornings you had breakfast and charge you 8 Euros per person. Other than that, a nice hotel in a good location.

Being part of a well-known chain, Mercure does not present any surprises, good or bad. Our room 604 was spacious, clean and well appointed. Best of all was that it had a wonderful view of the old city, through three room-width windows. Not overlooked at all, even from the far distance, so no need to worry about closing curtains. This room is twice the size of any other as can be seen on the emergency exit hotel plan on the back of the door. Reception staff were pleasant, cheerful and very helpful and, luckily for us, spoke good English. One thing we had to push for was to have the mini-bar emptied so that we could use it as a fridge, although this was not a satisfactory solution - too small and not tall or wide enough to take a bottle of wine. The hotel spec on this website claims that there is a fridge and also a mini-bar in the room, but this is not the case. In fact, you cannot even empty the mini-bar so that you can use it as a fridge yourself, because a notice says "you will be charged for any items moved from their present position" - there are sensors, so beware!! All in all, a very pleasant hotel for a week stay in Porto.

The hotel was very impressive, and there were many positives to be drawn from the experience there. Near the majority of attractions, but not too close to make the stay too expensive. Incredibly accessible from the airport (25 minute metro @ £2.00 per person). All staff were approachable and polite (spoke reasonable english). Only down-side was the view from our room wasn’t great, but expected because we didn’t get a 'special' room. Didn’t try the evening food, but the breakfast was reasonably priced, and enjoyable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Pleasant members of staff. Free internet access. Room kept very clean, matress a bit to hard and TV channel selection not great for Turist.

Although the immediate surroundings are a bit run down, the hotel is very good with good service. Be prepared to walk up a steep hill if you arrive by metro or train. There's a furnicular (500m away) which goes down to the riverfront (right by the bridge). Hotel is well located for shopping.

The location is great. Right on top of a hill in the old town. Blocks from the shopping and river. However, as a buisness hotel it's lacking. Insane internet prices. You need to buy cards to use the wireless in your room which should be free for guests but is not. They do have a couple of computers in the lobby for quick email checks (free). But do not assume it's free in your room. I think it would have been 20 Euros a day? The breakfast was pretty good. Not great, not bad, but again- not free for guests. Really? internet and breakfast not included? What year is this 1998? If you can get a low rate to stay here, I would, it's not bad, but the nickel and diming for services that in this day should be free is disheartening. One last thing, and this drives me absolutely crazy. I've been to over 70 countries and just about everywhere in Europe and if there is one thing that drives me nuts in hotels it's when they have instead of a walk-in shower with a door or even a shower curtain, they just have a single glass panel that ends 12 inches from the wall. No matter how careful one is, water will get all over the floor. Who invented these things? I mean, even a two/three panel door would stop 90% of the water, but one little piece of glass? come on. We had three rooms and all had this terrible shower.

At the time of making the hotel reservation, the hotel description indicated that breakfast was included, but when we arrived at the hotel for check-in, we were advised that it was not included in the hotel rate. That should have been made clear in the reservation.

We came into the restaurant close to closing and the staff didn't rush us and served a wonderful dinner with a great bottle of red wine from the Duero region for only 8 Euros!

Très bien situé. Jolie vue côté fleuve. La qualité de la prestation est bonne et agréable pour un touriste ; pas pour le professionnel qui a besoin d'une table de travail avec une surface permettant de poser son ordinateur, ses documents, un téléphone. De même il a besoin d'une connexion wifi, qui devrait être libre d'accès (gratuite).
