Helmsley Middletowne Hotel - Nueva York

Not a luxury hotel at all. Could not appreciate the old furniture, since it was breaking down. Knobs fallen off of dresser. Couch and mattress old and nasty. Assistance slow.

This was our second time staying herel. Staff is friendly and welcoming. The location is great and accessible to many venues. My only complaint is that the air conditioning was very noisy. However, the room was comfortable and clean and much more spacious than other NY hotels we have been in. There is no lobby to speak of, though a continental breakfast is provided each morning. Nothing special, but still a nice feature. If you want want a good place to stay at a reasonable price, I would definitely recommend this.

Horrible! I stayed at this hotel for one night, what a big mistake. The minute I walked in I knew this place was not going to be good. First, the front desk was apparently "under construction" so the tiny check-in desk was quite interesting; a computer and credit card machine and one lady checking to check you in. The lobby was far from the pictures that are posted. We were able to check in a bit early, but as soon as we walked into the room, we knew it was a mistake. There were stains all over the rug, 2 bugs on the wall, the carpet was pulling away from the bathroom floor, there was a hair on the shower curtain and very dark and outdated. We immediately went to the front desk and were told we cannot get a refund and go somewhere else because we already checked in. How otherwise would I know the room was so bad? I then proceeded to speak with the manager of the hotel at that time, who offered us an upgraded room. We were brought to this "upgraded room" by an extremely rude and unfriendly, security guy, and decided this will have to do since the penalty to leave was one night and that was all we were staying. This room was far from luxurious, but not as bad. There is no free continental breakfast since the hotel is under construction, no sitting area or newspapers. There is no concierge. Although "upgraded" the air conditioning in this room was not good, and loud. And to find in the morning water from condensation all over the heater and floor from the a/c. I also found couple 3" screws on the floor. Basically, we were very disappointed in this hotel and the service. To my understanding the other Helmsley hotel is a full service hotel, their sister hotel, which i have stayed before, completely on different ends of the spectrum. I thought i was booking something similar. Not the case, at all. Interestingly enough, I heard 2 other guests complaining about the hotel when i was checking out. Overall, a horrible experience. I will never stay at this hotel again

No room service - could have used some area maps and subway schedules to help people get around, but the personnel were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

The room was spacious and convenient. We enjoyed our stay. The breakfast is good but a little crowded.

Hotel is a bit weathered and showing signs of it's age but rooms are nice and big, clean and beds are comfortable. Staff are helpful aswell.

The stay was satisfactory, the staff was pleasant, the location was convenient and the price was appropriate. No question that some maintenance and TLC is required in the bathroom and kitchen areas.

yea its an old hotel.. yea maybe it needs small renovations.. but so what? thats what to expect with old hotels. I enjoyed my stay here.. i saw some paint peeling.. but im not picky. the room was great.. the staff was very nice and helped me when I needed them. I'd stay here again.

This was an EXCELLENT value. Very clean, friendly staff. Housekeeping responded promptly to a request for more towels. There was a free NY Times at my door in the morning. I will stay here in the future whenever possible.

Paint peeling in the bathroom, badly cracked porcelain in the sink, few electrical outlets in the room. At the discount I paid, still a good deal for a few nights at a convenient location. Priced at typical, I would not recommend this hotel.

The hotel is pretty shabby. The lobby is extremely small and, with breakfast served there, it gets impossibly crowded. The service was okay, but the room was adequate at best.

My expectations were met and the room was spacious and very clean. The continental breakfast in the Lobby was a treat. The only criticism is the public hallway on my floor is desperately in need of painting, door frames and trim are very chipped and distressed.

Very friendly staff. The only problems were low water pressure in the shower and difficulty keeping room temperature constant (pretty old wall unit for temperature control). Neither of these issues would keep me from staying at this hotel in the future. Free New York Times in the morning.

Rooms could use a little refurbishing; access to computer would be helpful; location is terrific

Stayed one weekday night in early May. Nicely sized room for Manhattan. Room fixtures a little outdated but perfectly serviceable. Great location, only a couple of blocks from Grand Central. Definitely request a room on the south side of hotel, since you get a nice view of Empire State building. I plan on staying here again in the future.

This hotel is old and in serious need of refurbishing. It was difficult to even find a socket to plug in a laptop. The wireless service did not work after sign-in and payment; the hotel made up for it by installing a wired network box that appeared to work through the 110v power wiring. On the other hand, service was very pleasant and professional.

No tea/coffee in the room. Room and bathromm dirty and hotel badly needs an update. Only upside is complimentary breakfast

First time staying at this hotel. Very pleasant surprise. Hotel staff was polite and helpful. Room exceeded expectations. Very quiet location. No street noise. Comfortable bed and great water pressure in shower (important!). Will definitely stay there again.

Great location, comfortable room, good value for the money, pleasant staff. Not 5-Star, but you could do a lot worse.

Easy to get around the city from there. The staff were very friendly and nice. Met all our needs!

This hotel feels like it was converted from apartments. It's a narrow building with minimal lobby. Rooms are clean but in need of refurbishing -- tired furnishings but the beds are at least comfortable. Great location for walking to midtown.

I got two bedroom suite and for the price it was well worth it. very nice people and hotel>

Great room for the money. We even got an unsolicited NY Times in front of our door on Friday - not sure if it was a mistake on thier part; alas, no paper on the second day.

Well enough for vacations where you just sleep there and you like to stay near the sightseeing places. Old fashion hotel with limited maintenance, everything work but old and no so well maintenance.

While the Midtown Helmsly has seen better days and might need some upgrades, it was a clean room in a great location for a good price. Skip the free breakfast and go to Ess-a-Bagel around the corner.

Great room for the money en NY

I arrived late into the city and was travelling alone before meeting friends the next day. Because of the friendly faces I met at the hotel and the comfortable room, I felt right at home immediately. The neighbourhood is very convenient and has a great range of amenities, so I found everything I needed, including some wine and breakfast for my fridge. It was just like having my own apartment on the UES, and I'd definiely recommed it. Thanks for looking after me.

The hotel has a miniscule lobby with only three seats. The first night room was filthy with stained carpet, stained, chipped furniture and and oppresive drab walls and decor. The management did find us a better room which was an improvement but the windows were filthy and like the first one had smudge marks. The clientele seemed to be all French who must have had a package deal at a better price. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to Motel 6.

The hotel is located in walk distance to the major point of NYC. The staff is nice and willing to help. The room is comfortable and good, not perfect, but nice for the price. I looked for hotel, and for the 3 of us YMCA with shared bathroom was much more expensive. I definitely recommend this hotel.

The hotel is conveniently located, and that is the only positive comment regarding the hotel. Run down rooms with defect airconditioning/heater, and paint scaling off in the bath room. Defect lightbulbs when we got the room, and slow uncourteous service from the staff. Door men are a positive exception. No place to eat breakfast. Food must be collected in the lobby, then taken up to the room. Overall, very disapointed with the hotel. As the cost is already high, we would gladly pay a few bucks extra to get slightly better accomodations and better service.

I thought that the hotel was in a great location and close to the everything, but the bed was uncomfortable and the room smelled musty. The shower had very little hot water and it would not kick in so I hade to take a cold shower which was not fun.

Hotel staff proved to be very capable, amicable, and helpful. Room, while clean, definitely shows its age; nevertheless, for the brief time spent in room, found our stay to be quite comfortable. Complimentary breakfast should be advertised as "complimentary continental breakfast." Because of location, would recommend hotel.

Great location for the money. Room was great. Hotel just a little run down. But staff was curtious and helpful.

I stayed in this hotel for 6 5 nights with two of my friends. We had a huge room, with a big walkin closet. The room was a little drafty and the interiors a little shabby. But that aside we had a very pleasant stay here. The front of house staff were always helpful and assisted us with dinner reservations. When i return to new york i will stay here and recommend others to stay here too.

Same place same time two years in a row. The staff recognized me on arrival and always greeted and asked about my day over my four night stay. The location was excellent for my business purposes and all my favorite shopping was just a few blocks away. My room/suite was very comfortable. I definitely plan to stay again when in town.
