Gran Hotel Velazquez - Madrid

First the good. The hotel is classic and beautifully decorated. But if you are looking for conveniences as a business traveler (as I was) such as an iron and an alarm clock, you won't find them here. The hotel has some classic charm but the walls are VERY thin and you can hear everything happening in the rooms around you (doors closing, people talking, toilets flushing, etc). In my specific case, the thermostat was inoperable and the room was very uncomfortable in that regard. I complained to the hotel staff THREE separate times during my two night stay, and no one was sent to fix the issue after I was told each time someone would look into it. While the location is convenient, there are several other hotels in the area which might have better service and more amenities.

We went to Madrid for new years and we were only there for 3 days, the room was so hot abd even after calling up the unhelpful staff to turn it off we resulted to keeping the windows wide open to cool it down as we went out. We came back to an even hotter room, they said they don't have any air-con and can see this hotel being awful in the summer. we also had a bottle of wine in our room that was half drunk. I never right on these walls but felt the need to tell others to not waste your time.

Updated old hotel with a street facing bar that's popular with the neighbors. Lots of Velazquez art in the lobby area. The facade was undergoing renovation but the neighborhood was full of shops and restaurants and busy walking traffic. Near enough to the center but outside the fray.

Nice hotel in a nice location, but do not expect a 4 star service. Our room by continental European standards was comfortable and clean. However we couldn't get much from front desk outside of check-in and check-out. Requests for local cuisine restaurant recommendation ended us in an average French restaurant. Request for simple information like, "How to get to.." or "Where can I find a currency changer" got us a shrug of the shoulder and "downtown". It might be because they didn't really know, but considering this is a 4-star hotel we felt they didn't think it was their job to try to help us.

The hotel is in a good location, Rooms were quiet looking on to internal courtyard (no views).Rooms were comfortable and bathrooms good.Overall condition of public spaces is now a little tired and requires upgrading.A big disappointment were the surly unwelcoming staff. well dressed but poor manner. We had two rooms and the were not taken up to our rooms. The wrong room number was written down by reception staff but the plastic door key worked. We totally unpacked our luggage . On return to the room plastic key did not work. Returned to reception and they were unhelpful insisting that room number had a 7 was a 2.We had to move rooms and there was no apology at all.A smile and a good manner go along way. Staff are not motivated.

We arrived very late as our flight had been delayed from Edinburgh.There where 6 ladies away for the weekend.The hotel had upgraded one group to a junior suite and the other two rooms where fine.I stayed in room 716 which was a smallish room but fine for two people however there was a smeel from the toilet and there was a bad crack on the bathroom tile(dangerous for young children).The satff where friendly.The hotel certainly has character and I would go back.We did not eat in the dining room.

Great hotel for the money, close to the metro, I would stay there again. Buffet breakfast is overpriced.

Overall the hotel was very nice and in a good location. The staff seemed fine and there were nice facilities, although we were there for just an overnight so did not take advantage of them. The only issue was with the room, which had uncomfortable beds (compared to other hotels I stayed in during my trip to Spain) and had a very musty odor that forced me to open the window to let in fresh air. Unfortunalty, the night was cool, so I had to keep opening and shutting the window all night to limit the bad smell and keep the room warm enough.

I particularly like this location near "La Castellana".

I was very disappointed with the hotel. The front desk personnel were rude and unhelpful. The bed and pillows were hard and unconfortable. The bathroom was dirty with mildew between the bathroom tiles around the tub and shower. The covers toilet seat and bidet had many chips and schatches all over it.

This is an elegant hotel with beautifully decorated rooms. It is clean, comfortable and inviting. The staff never interferred with our privacy, cleaning the room only when we were gone regardless of the time of day. It is a bit of a walk to the metro stop but the walk is pleasant with lots of nice shops and cafes nearby. We would definitely consider staying in this hotel again.

Good base for walking the sights. Ask at the hotel for local restaurant. Tapas bar was good for lunch & dinner. Very near lovely cental park.

We enjoyed the very clean room, and the bed was the best one we slept on in Spain (out of 5 hotels), but we didn't get what we had requested. They wanted to give us a smoking room with 2 beds (we wanted to be in the same bed) and to get a non-smoking room with one bed we had to pay 35 euros more per night. This significantly reduced our happiness with the place. The front desk was hit or miss with the helpfulness but they did speak English, so you could get help from someone at some point in time even if Spanish isn't your language. The location is between two metro stops (neither are that far) and very close to good shopping and the Retiro, but the rest of the tourist spots are a good walk. It was very quiet, which was nice for sleeping, in contrast to many places closer to the tourist areas. They have 2 working elevators, which was great, and a restaurant that looked pricey but was right there.

It was in a central location so accessable to the Prado, shopping and good restaurants. Taxis were always there and the concierge helpful. We tried to reach the hotel in advance but the phone numbers did not work. We need to talk to customer care regarding this and would like a contact.

Overall the hotel was good, and met my expectations. I was however disappointed with the reception personal. They were corteous, but not helpfull or friendly, with exception of Pablo.

Clean and modern rooms, nice staff and great location. Price is a bit high...

Avendo un bambino di 1 anno, per noi è importante la comodità in tutti i sensi. L'albergo si come struttura che come posizione, offre tutto questo. Da tener presente che nella zona ci sono i negozi più belli di Madrid.

Very good hotel close to the city centre.
