Hotel is in a great location, 1 block from the SOL metro stop. The room we had was large compared to other Euro hotels that we've stayed in. My only regret is that we were only in Madrid for 1 day. The front desk recomended we use the Hop-On/off bus tour located by the metro. Using this we were able to get a crash site seeing trip. If you are flying in from the airport here are the directions by metro. This is from T4 and takes about 45min door to door, but its a cheap easy ride. 1. At Aeropuetrto T4 Take Linea 8 - Direction Nuevos Ministerios 2. Connect at Nuevos Ministerios 3. Take Linea 10 - Direction Puerta del Sol 4. Connect at Tribunal 5. Take Linea 1 - Direction Valdecarros 6. Get off at SOL

Walls very thin, I had to get up to check that the person next door was not in my bathroom. Also heavily used stairs are bare tile and the noise of people using them echoes all around. In fairness I did not try asking for a quieter room so maybe I was unlucky.

The hotel management was very helpful. However, we had to change rooms 3 times to find a room that was comfortable. The first room was so small, we could not get our suitcases around the bed. It had one window that faced a cement wall. The second room was an attic room with ceilings that were sloped and required us to stoop over to walk. It also had a closet big enough for 6 items, no drawers. We kept politely asking for an adequate room and the manager was very cooperative. Our 3rd room was comfortable and had a nice balcony. However, it looked out on the run down building across the alley. The hotel sits on a narrow alley that is dark and noisy at night. It is within walking distance to most places of interest in Madrid. This hotel is rated 4 star, and looks like it in the lobby. The breakfast was not included - 12 euro each was very adequate.

This is a lovely hotel, with a luxurious feel to it. The location is very central and is walking distance to anywhere you might need to go. Our room was excellent with a very large bathroom. The only complaints I'd have would be about the staff- they were surly and unhelpful.

The hotel is in a great spot, being very close to Gran via subway station and not far from all the action. I would request a room that does not face the nightclub at the side of the hotel as it kept us awake to almost six o'clock one night. Another issue we had was that the rooms do not have an iron, and if you want your clothes ironed you have to give them to a maid and pay to get them done, which isnt cheap, and if you want it done the same day its double price. Overall not a bad hotel.

Very good value for the money. Great breakfast available and personnel was friendly. Although all major attractions are only a walk away, if you plan on staying on a Friday night, beware of rooms facing the front of the hotel because there is a club right next to it and there were hundreds of noisy party goers in front of the hotel until 7am the next day.

Fairly anonymous rooms, but the public space is quite interesting. A good location on a street parallel to the Gran Via, but I think there might be night clubs further along the street going by the loud shouting at 3am. If this bothers you ask for a room that doesn't overlook Aduana. A good hotel, well worth considering if you can get a price you like.

I want to first state that if you have never been to Europe and your from America there are a few things you need to be prepared to know. First off Europe is extremely old compared to America therefore when you go and stay in a city like Madrid that the rooms are going to be signifciantly smaller than you are use to getting at a hotel in the states. There lifestyle is completely different than ours. There portions sizes for drinks and meals are smaller. They are use to firmer beds therefore you are not going to get a bed with a pillowtop for comfort. When you go to Europe most people do not appreciate you coming into their country and not being able to speak their language. This hotel has a staff who speaks English and will help you if you ask for it. If they arent as friendly as you would get from customer service here then dont be surprise that is not something they pride themself on. For Europe this hotel was great - the location was wonderful, the staff as helpful as can be, the restaraunt on site was a 5 star restaraunt, and the price was good. I did however take warning from other people who posted comments on this hotel and requested a room at the back of the hotel and although we did not get that the first night we were able to change the second night. If your going to Madrid this is a good place to stay.

The hotel was very central and it was an excellent starting point for all the sights and shopping. If staying here I would advise you ask for a middle room as we had one at the back of the hotel which was onto a street with a nightclub, very noisy. Rooms were quite small, bathroom was big and very clean. I would highly recommend this hotel and would without doubt stay here again if I return.

we enjoyed our stay in the pleasant hotel with helpful staff at all levels (although room staff did not speak much English). The localtion but general quietness of the street was great. Breakfast was lovely also. The only slight issue we had was that there was a strong smell of smoke in our bathroom 315 which seemed to be coming in throught the vents - when we switched the extractor fan on it did clear slowly. Don't know if this was a generalised finding or we were just over a smokiing room??

The staff were unable to do anything about it. - beds were hard and uncomfortable (made sleeping hard) - Poor sound isolation. You can hear what people are talking about as they wait to be admitted to a very noisy nightclub that stays open till 0600 or later. To summarise: This is a 2+/3 hotel masquerading as a 4*. We recently stayed in the Hotel Maria Elena in Madrid. It was absoloutely beautiful and we enjoyed a lovely stay. The hotel was very conveniently located and seemed to be renovated quite recently. There was crown molding throughout our room, even the bathroom which was large and well appointed. The staff was especially friendly and helpful, and the restaurant was so good that we ate there twice! I would definately recommend a stay at this beautiful hotel to anyone, and hope to have the opportunity to stay there again someday.

The hotel was indeed well positioned in the center of the city and was clean and apparently efficient however with the exception of the two occupants of the front desk who were polite, friendly and very helpful along with the Maitre'd of the restaurant, the staff in general were only as polite as a reasonable degree of professionalism required; the behaviour was shallow and clearly resentful. It made for an unpleasant stay. And the cleaners woke me up clattering in the service elevator at 6am each morning, the phone in my room worked inconsistently, the fancy multi-head shower was a joke, the bill for the minibar was calculated on departure based on the number of items missing from a standard inventory and I had to negotiate for some time until I managed to get the message across that I hadn't even opened the door of the thing. I hoped that the hotel would be quiet and friendly as it is on a back street although very centrally poitioned. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone however unless they were on an overnight, strictly business trip and even then, the total lack of any technology access and the ridiculous hourly charge for using the lobby computer to access the internet makes for a suspect value to the business traveller.

We had 2 nights at this hotel and can't fault it. It is in a perfect location, 2 minutes from Puerta del Sol and another few minutes to Plaza Mayor. When we arrived we were hungry and wanted to stroll somewhere to get churros and the man in reception recommended the most amazing place, just off Calle Arenal. Any time we asked for info they were all really helpful. We had a twin room and arrived to find 2 lovely queen size beds and a great bathroom with everything we needed. The only thing that was missing was an iron - they offer an ironing service only. On our 2nd night there was a problem with the hot water and the shower was only a trickle but they were really apologetic and said it was getting fixed asap and offered us a free breakfast next day, which was well worth the lack of hot water! We said we would have paid for breakfast if we'd been there another night as it was so good and set us up for the day - they also had a 12 euro offer for breakfast. I would stay there again any time.

A critical and particular traveler trying to keep cost manageable in a deflated dollar world, I spent hours on-line looking for a good choice of Madrid hotel. One night I read a review by a woman who said, "stop looking-- the Maria Elena Palace has the best location in the city". I took her words to heart and booked, hoping for more than just a great location. This hotel exceeded my expectations in many ways. The location is as good as promised-- dead center in the city with amazing subway proximity and great commerical options within walking distance, but the Maria Elena offers much more. Though in a very active part of the city, the street is basically quiet, and if you get a room at the back of the hotel (ours was fabulous, 411)it's amazingly quiet. Also, the lobby is truly lovely, a nice place to relax, and both the lobby and the rooms are beautifully furnished. There was plenty of space for spreading out and more than adequate closet space. The modern, marble-clad bathroom was large, the water pressure good, and every toiletry was provided. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. I've stayed in a less convenient hotel in Madrid and in a less friendly and spacious one. For the price, the Maria Elena is a fabulous choice. Do what I did, take the word of a satisfied reviewer, and go ahead and choose this hotel- you should be glad you did!

Pros: Clean rooms... helpful desk staff... good location. Cons: Beds were like sleeping on a trampoline. Inconsistent supplies in the room [envelopes, but no pen or stationery; no instructions on making phone calls, including calling the front desk]. My family booked three rooms for two legs of our trip to Spain, so in all, we rented six rooms. I wouldn't go back because the whole point of a hotel is a place to sleep. Unless you like an extra-extra-extra-firm mattress, look elsewhere. I spent my whole trip in a jet-lagged stupor because I couldn't get a decent night's rest.

This hotel is in a great location within walking distance of all the major attractions. It has a nice bar and lobby and our room and bathroom was nicely decorated and clean however the bed was very hard and uncomfortable also the room was warm and stuffy, we tried to adjust the air conditioning but it is set and can't be lowered so we opened the windows. We were on the 3rd floor at the back of the building overlooking a small road, we had 2 big windows with small balconies we thought how lovely until midnight, when the disco across the street opened to hundreds of kids who started leaving the premises from 3am onwards, the noise level was terrible. We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each night the noise level got worse and on the third night it went on from 3am till 5 or 6 in th morning with kids screaming and shouting, we got practically no sleep. When we complained to the hotel we were told that they could do nothing about it, it is totally unacceptable to expect guests to put up with such a level of discomfort.

It was a slightly chilly in Madrid that night, but still no AC for upper floor room that get warm and stuffy. Had to open window to let cool air in for most of the night. Bed was hard as a rock (which we found at all 4 hotels we stayed at in Spain), but not a big deal. Location is great for shopping, sites, art museums, etc. Great place and great staff. We stayed four nights at this hotel. The first two nights we had a room with a window that faced a tiny interior courtyard with a metal staircase used by the staff. From 5am until midnight we heard staff members running up and down the noisy metal stairs and slamming the doors as they entered and exited each floor. Sleep was impossible without ear plugs. We finally managed to switch rooms the third night to a much nicer room facing the fairly quiet street in front of the hotel. Both rooms had problems with the ultra-sophisticated temperature controls in the shower. The temperature setting could only be varied from absolutely scalding to painfully boiling hot. Both rooms were also very hot - the central air was not working. The location is great - and the price is good. Our second room was very nice. If we had gotten that room from day one our stay would have been much more enjoyable.
