The Scotsman Hotel - Edimburgo

Great hotel, directly across from the train station and very clean. Spoiled by the fact that there is NO air conditioning and although the windows open (after a struggle), it doesnt do much to alleviate the stifling heat. I was woken at 6am by the radiator in the room making an awful whining noise and then couldnt get back to sleep for it. Checkout was 11am - massive queues and nowhere to stand so a lot of jostling around. I won't be going back which is a pity because it could be a great hotel.

Our stay at the Scotsmanwas enjoyable overall. However, there were a couple of things that could be improved upon. We arrived by car and had a huge problem finding somewhere to park just to check in and unload luggage. They have no on-site-car park (it was a couple of blocks away) and they did not have a valet. They did have a bellman that came to the car at the curb to help with the luggage and direct my husband as to where to park. He was awesome, polite, helpful, very informative and had a great personality. The room did not have air conditioning and was rather stuffy when we first got in. I was only able to open one window about 8 inches to get some fresh air. We were there on a Friday night and it was VERY noisy with the partyers on the street below. And the bed has seen better days. It sank in the middle as if it wanted to fold in two. However, the Brasserie Restaurant has 5 star food and service. I probably would not choose to stay there again.

This was one of most comfortable beds! Location feet away from Royal mile and elevator from hotel to Waverly train station. Swimming pool with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna all inches away from each other. Truly loved hotel.

We stayed in one of the study rooms very impressed with decor and views of castle and edinburgh. Staff friendly and helpful would definately recommend an overnight stay .

No large lobby - small private reception. Excellent location near all tourist attractions, lots of restaurants, etc. Room was not great - great view if you crane your neck to look through the high gabled windows. Otherwise nice bathroom, a bit small, no way to figure out how heated towel rack could be turned on. If I had paid full price might have been disappointed in the room but got a good deal. Anyway, location can't be beat. Staff very nice. Don't look for grand foyer, elegant open areas, etc because they aren't there. There is a nice but sparsely furnished "drawing room" through a little corridor off of the reception and through a closed door. No one sitting there - possibly most people don't know it is there. Outrageous cost of wireless internet.

Excellent Location, room was clean, large and had all the facilities you'd expect in a 5star hotel. Staff were very friendly. If i had to nit-pick, i would say that the bed was too soft!!

The only poor thing about the hotel was the quality of the air conditioning and the inconvenience of car parking.

A stunningly gorgeous hotel. The service from when we first arrived to when we left was faultless. Arrived early morning after a sleeper trip to Edinburgh and the reception staff took our bags and looked after them. The reception did also check to see if our room was ready, even though it was only 8:00. They did offer to take a contact number so they could call and let us know when it was ready. The room was gorgeous, although perhaps a little smaller than I was expecting. Bathroom was great with both a bath and shower. A great range of toiletry products were provided as well as nail care kit, shower cap etc. The complimentary slippers were very comfy, but a little small for my other half. The bathrobes I was disappointed with, I was expecting them to be all fluffy and found that they were not and felt almost like towels get after they have been washed a thousand times. We did try the swimming pool and found that this was rather cold even on a December day. The jacuzzi though was so warm and could have spent hours in there!! One word of warning to note, there is a bottle of water on the side and my boyfriend nearly feel in the trap of thinking this was compliementary, a later look on the mini bar list saw that it actually cost £15!!! The only minor problems are just that, and did not spoil what was a great stay and a fantastc hotel.

I splurged a little on the Scotsman because I wasn't sure how terrible the weather in Edinburgh would be in November and I wanted a comfortable place to retreat. This was it. The room was a delight and the staff as well. And the location was absolutely great for roaming around New and Old Town. I'll be back . . .

Great location. I was on a business trip and was disappointed with a few aspects. This is a hotel that sells itself as a 5 star venue. When I asked to use the internet in the 'business centre', they tried to charge me £8 per hour!! What a joke. Any reputable hotel I've stayed in before has had a free access policy. Also the room service was awful - a greasy, cold burger with soggy chips. And the swimming pool closed at half four - not allowing one an opportunity to relax there in the evening. Disappointing overall.

great location just 1min from the Royal Mile and the staff were attentive and service outstanding. Out room was 5mins late from being ready so they offered us a complimentary drink in the bar.

I was visiting Edinburgh for a romantic break with girlfriend and The Scotsman was perfect. The room was spacious and luxurious, I have read previous reviews and had noticed complaints of street noise - yes there was some, but it was minimal, it is a city centre hotel afterall. The Spa was just the ticket to unwind and the brasserie is very grand and elegant. All in all an enjoyable stay. The staff were very helpful when called upon. I would definitely go back.

Great position and friendly helpful staff. However the Study rooms were small more like a caravan with all the facilities but not enough space. OK for single occupancy but not for a couple who intend to stay more than a couple of nights. Would not use again as this was the smallest 5 star room Ive ever stayed in

Perfect location. Easy walk to all locations: on the Royal Mile, New Town, and 100 meters from the Train Station. Deluxe room was worth the upgrade. Clean, luxurious room's including baths. Romantic. Be aware no A/C, but was not an issue for us in September with day time outdoor temperature of 16c/61f. Room was very quiet on backside of hotel and we still have a very nice view. Staff was very helpful. We checked in at 8:00 am.

We only stayed one night, however, staff was extremely helpful and friendly, room was nice and the hotel was beautiful. Our friends enjoyed its gym and pool facilities. They have a lovely bar and restaurant where we enjoyed drinks before going to dinner.

Stayed at this hotel for one night and the quality of service and hotel made me want to stay longer. The staff are extremly helpful.

The staff is outstanding. However, the hotel is well worn. Furniture is dirty. Mattress lumpy and no air con to boot. The surrounding streets smell of urine every morning and the noise level is very disturbing.

Our first challenge was to find the hotel entrance. Once we found it we were informed that this hotel did not have parking and were sent to a public lot. However, a valet was so kind as to take our luggage so we did not have to lug them a couple of blocks. The hotel elevator was tiny and slow. In case you are not aware, there are very few air conditioners in Scotland, therefore we had to leave our windows open at all times. There were quite a few pubs partying into the late hours. On the bright side, our room was very nice. It was updated and comfortable. The staff was always courteous and helpful. Hotel restaurant very good.

This is a must stay. I walked about to compare it to other nice hotels and this was the nicest by far. The spa & pool facilities are incredible! I highly highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful historic hotel in Edinburgh.

Great room and excellent service all around. Very friendly and helpful staff. The health club/spa is worth taking in as well. Convenient location for all the important sights/sites here and good breakfast also.

Excellent hotel, lovely boutique interior, lovely modern room with ensuite, huge fitness centre with a funky stainless steel pool, jacuzzi, sauna & steamroom. Very central, within 100m of the Royal Mile, 5 min walk to Prince's Street, Edinburgh Castle, and 10mins walk to Holyrood Palace. The only downside for us was that the hotel doesn't have parking, but if you ask at reception you get 30% off the cost of the train station car park, which is 5 min walk away.

We checked in and the bell service was excellent, showing us all the amenities of the room. The view was wonderful, looking out at the bridge and over to Princes Street. We asked that ice be brought to our room, and were assured no problem, then went about unpacking. After 20 minutes and no ice, we went out to explore the city. When we returned 2 hours later, still no ice. Called Reception, the only number available for Everything and requested ice and were assured it would be right up to the room. 40 minutes and no ice. My husband went downstairs and requested again. . .waiting until they gave it to him. Same thing happened the next day. We thought it was all a lack of communication between "reception" and whoever was going to get the ice, until we called reception and asked for help on directions to reach an address where we were to begin an evening tour. (We wanted to know how long it would take us to walk there.) After being assured an answer would be promptly called back to us, we waited 40 minutes before going down to the front desk. They had contacted the person to help us; he hadn't done anything, and then told us to wait as someone came into the hotel lobby. We walked out and gave up on the tour. There was also construction and scaffolding just off the main lobby, which actually didn't bother us nearly as much as the lack of service.

My husband and I stayed here on our last night in Edinburgh. We decided to splurge a little and really glad we did. The staff was great and very helpful. The room was bigger than another hotel we had stayed at earlier in our trip. Also, it was more comfortable. It was very convenient to the Royal Mile, with it being just a block away. It's also within walking distance to the train station. We would definitely stay here again.

Service was sporadic. A breakfast we never ordered was delivered early one morning waking us up. Laundary "disappeared" for two days. Room not made up when we returned one afternoon, so we were told to have a drink in the drawing room while they made up the room and then charged us for the drinks (that we didn't want in the first place). Very noisy room - overlooked a bar with drunken revellers keeping us awake until 3:30 am two nights in a row.

I'm going to keep this short and sweet. This is the BEST service I have ever received from any hotel. For the doorman to remember my name after being told once, and every member of staff knowing me by sight right away I was made to feel totally at home. I will never stay anywhere else when in Edinburgh.

We had stayed at The Scotsman before, and were looking forward to another 'treat' weekend away from home. However, we were very disappointed with the level and quality of service - crockery and glasses wee smeared with lipstick, the copy of the 'complimentary' local review magazine in our room was out of date, and was not replaced despite two phone calls until the routine cleaning of the room three hours later. The service at breakfast was chaotic and offhand, and generally we did not have the 'special' experience we had enjoyed before. Our room, supposedly 'deluxe', was small and pokey - less than half the size of one we had stayed in before at the same rate. Overall, a disappointing experience that fell far short of the mark.

I was coming off a previous 3 day stay in Dublin where I'd unfortunately gotten terribly sick. The Scotsman was a fantastic place to end up next. Sumptuous bedding, a well appointed bathroom with a terrific line of personal care products from a well-known local spa, an interesting stainless steel pool, and a fantastic location from which to explore the old part of the city. The staff was exceptional, the hotel immaculate, and the nifty little private service hatches are a cool touch.

Perfectly positioned for the City, and very good service from the staff. However whilst the rooms were comfortable the lounge area was not made especially comfortable rather bland with no fire or any other comforts one would like at the festive season. In fact there were no seasonal touches. They are though I repeat very efficient even moving us to a quieter bedroom when the pipes in our room attempted to become a pipe ban on their own, at 12 midnight. Overall a smart hotel great for commercial travllers but definitely not for a "Mr & Mrs Smith" weekend. By the way forget the bar the service was attrocious.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Scotsman when we visited edinburgh for our 10th wedding anniversary. I would definitely recommend the hotel, the service was excellent and the rooms are comfortable and everything you would expect from this type of hotel. The decor is on the traditional side so if you prefer a more contemporary/minimalist feel then maybe not for you. Very central location too.

This hotel is in a great central location - within easy walking distance to all amenities etc. We experienced really friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are very comfortable and well equiped - great entertainment system, coffee machine and a vast toiletry selection. The hotel building itself is beautiful in many respects - the layout of the hotel is certainly unique. If you have a car, the bonus is staff will take care of parking it for you but be aware that for 24hrs it will cost you £20 as there is no guest carpark. A hotel we would certainly return to and recommend to friends.

great place, very well located, clean, good service and confortable

Took my mam for a special birthday and have a lovely stay. Wish it was a longer one. Room was available as soon as we got there - very close to Train Station. Luxurious deluxe twin room with great views but down side was that it was noisy - the traffic across the bridge never stopped all night. Had treatments in the spa and took advantage of the pool, sauna etc - all of which were great - although the products to buy were expensive. The restaurant was closed on the night we were there but we booked a table in the brasserie - was given the best table in the house and brought a class of champagne on the house. food was delicious - couldn't fault a thing. The scallops melted in your mouth. Found staff very pleasant. They seemed to think of everything. Would visit again but ask for a quieter room next time.

My husband and I spent a night at the Scotsman to celebrate my birthday. We loved the hotel and had a great time. The only (minor) glitch in an otherwise great weekend was the staff at the Escape Spa, whom we found to be somewhat discourteous; the pool closed at 8pm, last entry was 7:30, and they did not want to let us in at 7:31! However, they did relent, and we enjoyed both an evening and morning trip to the fantastic spa.

The Scotsman was great. The only thing I would suggest is hairdryers in the rooms. Even my tiny little hotel in London had a hairdryer.

My wife and I travel quite a bit, but after a recent career change we've had to focus on a 'budget' vacation. We figured we'd save some money in Edinburgh by booking through Hotels.com at a place that many friends had recommended. We went in with low expectations for the room since we got it so cheap, but we were extremely impressed. The room was perfect, the staff were attuned to our every need, and the hotel itself was beautiful - not to mention immaculate. It was a great start to our european tour.

The Scotsman is a unique place with great charm, warm staff, and ease of access to many of the key tourist and business venues in Edinburgh. My room was very comfortable and had a great view onto Princes Street and into New Town. The hotel's health club is quite good, with the most interesting pool I've experienced (stainless steel, a fallout of the conversion of the building from the headquarters of the Scotsman newspaper to a hotel). The concierge staff was eager to help and provided some fine recommendations for dinner (I enjoyed Doctors for a pint and Outsiders for a meal). I will stay there again without hesitation.

Auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen. Sehr freundliches Personal. Ein Zimmer mit einem King Bett, und Sie denken Sie haben eine Suite gemietet. Aber auch das Zimmer mit dem Queen Bett ist sehr schön groß, nur das Bett ist eben etwas kleiner. Brasserie ist zu empfehlen. Schmeckt lecker und der Russische Barmann kann 1A Cocktails mixen. Super Zentral mit tollem Ausblick.

Dette hotel overgik langt hvad man kan forvente - især prisen taget i betragtning. Hyggelig stemning, suveræn beliggenhed, skønne værelser, fantastisk service og betjening, dejlig morgenmed og lækre svømme fasciliteter. Et af den slags hotel, som er en rejse værd i sig selv!

Overraskende god service av vennlig og imøtekommende betjening. Historisk bygning med perfekt beliggenhet.

Utmerket beliggenhet, nyrenovert med viktoriansk stil. SPA, svømmebasseng, boblebad og sauna i underetasjen til fri bruk.

Il soggiorno allo Scotsman mi è piaciuto molto. Lo staff del ristorante, della concierge e di tutti gli altri servizi è attento, veloce e soprattutto giovane! La bellezza di questo antico albergo un tempo sede del famoso quotidiano, è poprio giocata fra eleganza del secolo scorso e fashion moderno. La cena al ristorante è stata meravigliosa:consiglio vivamente cod and haddock. Consiglio questo albergo a giovani coppie e a businessmen/women vista la strategica posizione dell'albergo. Ci ritornerò di certo.

Var i Edinburgh för första gången tillsammans med min fästman som fyllde 30 år under vistelsen. Vi blev oerhört väl behandlade av The Scotsman Hotel, kanonbra service och mycket trevlig personal. Att få vilken tidning man önskade levererad till dörren på morgonen var lite extra guldkant på vistelsen. Kan VARMT rekommendera andra att bo på det här hotellet som dessutom låg så att man hade promenadavstånd till det mesta. //Sofie
