Hotel Moderno - Madrid

The positive about this hotel is it's location - very central to everything and right in the middle of the Puerta del Sol. The windows are fabulous in that they block out the noise from the busy streets. The rooms are small, but charming none the less. I also want to highlight a fabulous staff - Chela (Consuelo) who went out of her way to help us up and beyond what was necessary. She is wonderful!!!! I used this hotel twice during my stay in Spain (at the beginning and the end as I flew out of Madrid). However.... the downside of this hotel is that the walls are paper thin and you will hear everything from your neighbors if they are loud. The people next door to us yelled, laughed, screamed, sang, etc. until 2:00 a.m. The housecleaning was also not the best and some of the staff (aside from Chela) were not very helpful at all. Be aware that there is construction going on in front of the hotel right now as well. Something to watch out for is that on the first day of our stay one of the staff told us that breakfast was included. When we checked out, we were charged. I think the breakfast is included only if you book directly with them, but not if you use a booking service - so be aware of this. Also, the taxi drivers are the WORST in Madrid - in that they are sneaky and will charge you unethically. Be sure to ask the hotel to arrange a shuttle for you to return to the airport. The cost was 26 euro. Our first taxi ride to the airport cost us 56 euro and I believe the taxi driver drove to the outshirts of town to get more $$$ from us. Again - arrange for the shuttle once you check into the hotel (it requires at least 24-48 hrs in advance). So, it you get a room with quite neighbors and Chela is working - you will have a fabulous stay. Otherwise - there will be some bumps for you.

This hotel was at a great location, next to Puerta del Sol and many of the Madrid atractions where just a short walk away. These attractions included Museo del Prado, plaza mayor, parque del buen retiro and some more. The staff was very friendly and ready to help you and to provide recommendations about food and places to go. I would come back to this hotel, without any hesitations

Though noisy at night (I was on the street side), you can walk out the front door and with a few blocks walk to Prado, the Sol Metro is right in front of your doorway and if I had known more about the Metro, I certainly would have taken far more advantage of it. I walked to Thyssen Museum, to the Egyptian Temple, to the many elegant parks to the North. All in all a great place to stay if you want to hit the main city points.

Hotel Moderno couldn't be in a better location! The hotel and rooms were very nice. The only problem I had was that the outlets did not work with my power adapter and I wasn't able to use the wi-fi to do my work. The front desk wasn't very helpful with trying to help me solve this problem.

Only issue was that I asked for a room with a balcony when I checked in and they said none were available, but the hotel seemed half-empty. It's possible the rate I paid excepted me from having a room with a view. Also, beware of the cost from the airport to the hotel - cabs from the Madrid airport are very expensive! Ask how much it will be to the Moderno because I definitely got ripped off.

Perfect location

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Moderno for one night, while traveling home from our honeymoon cruise. We found the room - particularly the bathroom -- to be spacious, clean, and comfortable. The location was great, and truly within steps of the Sol Metro station. We took the Metro in from the airport, were able to explore the great neighborhood surrounding the hotel, got a good night's sleep, and took the Metro back to the airport all within about 18 hours. Thumbs up! The only concern we had was that they make it seem like the continental breakfast is included in the room, but it actually costs 11 Euros.

Hotel Moderno, Madrid was an excellent experience: Great location near the metro,shopping, etc. The quality of the hotel was also excellent, as well as the staff. No complaints.

We enjoyed our room's view of El Cortes Ingles across the street (back side of hotel) without having stares from a neighbor. The tapas pub below our room conveniently closed about 10:30 to 11 so we could keep windows open when we didn't want ac on. Great windows and shutters kept noise out otherwise. Helpful, friendly staff at front desk, including geting us an airport taxi at front door at 3am - it is on pedestrian street right at Puerta del Sol which is super location.

We were very happy with our room! It was a little on the small side, but it was very clean and in an excellent location to everything. I would stay there again!

Great location, reasonable cost, quiet, and clean...what more do you need?

Hotel is old and the rooms are a bit small. Beds comfortable and the staff friendly. Can't beat the location. Breakfast appears to be included in the price as they 'advertise' it being on the 1st floor between 7-11. There is an 'extras' menu that has price. Nowhere is there a mention that this continental breakfast is going to cost you 13 euros when you check out. In America the continental breakfasts are usually included in the price. Especially when you're in an upper-class hotel. That's my only complaint.

We did not receive a response to emails requesting confirmation of our two seperate reservations, finally we asked another hotel we stayed at to confirm for us. The hotel staff seem a bit bored with visitors, but we checked in without incident. We needed a corkscrew on New Year's Eve and were given a prompt "no!" without further direction (even though the hotel serves breakfast daily by way of full kitchen ...). We were also turned away rudely when asking for simple things such as matches ... make sure you have enought TP in your room or expect a long wait. Other than the service, the hotel was very clean and surprisingly quiet, even on a holiday. The furniture was updated in the rooms and the designs were modern, but comfortable. The price was more than fair considering the hotel location to parking garages, shopping and dining. We will stay at the Apsis Moderno again when visiting Madrid.

We chose this hotel based on the hotels.com reviews and were not disappointed. The location was great being right next to Puerta del Sol. We were able to walk most anywhere we wanted to go or catch the Metro. The staff was friendly.

Although our room was quite small it was very clean and had a good sized bathroom. The location however is outstanding, right in the middle of everything you would want to see. The Square is busy and noisy for a lot of the night but the double glazing does an excellent job and the street noise does not disturb you at all. I would happily go back but I think I'd request a larger room next time. Also a room high up is better as you can hear the underground trains in the rooms lower down.

this hotel is close to many major sites in the middle of the city. however, because of its location, and the Spaniard's well-deserved reputation for partying all night, steet noise was occasionally a problem. overall, an excellent value and we would stay there again.

My wife & I stayed for two nights mid Nov 2008. Everything one could ask for: clean and cozy and QUIET room, grand breakfast spread, TV lounge, courteous/helpful staff, close to: transportation choices, shopping, dining, nightlife. The only minor shortcoming for me was the WiFi signal was weak in our 3rd floor room (worked fine in the bathroom!).

This hotel is superb, with wonderful staff, and has the best location of any three-star hotel in Madrid! (In fact, it probably will be a four-star hotel soon.) The staff is very attentive, helpful, and friendly, and the rooms are nicely decorated in a tasteful, modern style. Free WiFi is a big plus. The breakfast is fantastic, but it is expensive for what you get.

When we arrive at the Hotel, there was a problem with the reservation of my daughter and the two persons that were on the recption took care of the situation in a very nice form and we were very pleased to them.

This hotel was in a perfect location - right in the center of the city and right by the Sol metro stop. Our room was very clean. The hotel is definitely designed with a modern flair, true to its name. The reception manager was very friendly and helpful. The included breakfast was plentiful with a good selection as far as free breakfasts go. I definitely recommend this hotel!

Moderno Hotel is located in the heart of Puerto Del Sol, the "Time's Square" of Madrid. 2 very popular discoteks are right down the street and there are more bars and tapas restaurants within a 2 block radius than you could visit in an entire week! The hotel was clean, and had free Wi-Fi in a lounge, but depending on where your room was located, you could connect. Just a quick note, if you book through electronic means, breakfast is not included! And at 11 Euros Per Person for a light continental breakfast, you can do better in one of the many cafes down the street. Overall we would highly recommend this hotel, it was a great start to our trip to Spain.

This hotel is located in the heart of touristic area. Subway 100 m away, the shopping and entertaining starts right after you step on the street (Starbucks block away, nice delicatessen store across the street, bunch of diners and restaurant along the street, big supermarket couple blocks away)All sightseeing of Madrid is in walking distance from Puerta del Sol. Hotel is renovated and extremely clean! Few things to keep on mind: for family stays especially: no refrigerator, no iron, no kettle. All hotels on this street (Arenal St) are on top of subway line, which you can hear evenings and early mornings, street is very alive at anytime, but sound resistant windows do magic. The personal is very nice & helpful, i personally bothered them a lot, they were very patient:) Another important info that hotel has free wireless internet.

Hotel was pretty good. Staff is helpful, polite, and speaks English well. Rooms seem to be recently renovated but the halls and room smelled like stale cigarette smoke. Location couldn't be better - basically in Puerto del Sol and a few minute walk to the palace and Plaza Mayor.

The hotel was located in one of the best parts of the city center; literally 100 feet from the "SOL" metro station. You can walk to major landmarks such as the Opera House, the Royal Palace, and the Plaza Mayor or jump on the metro to get to other attractions. There were plenty of shops and restaurants all around and it was easy to get good food at reasonable prices. The hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. We got a free upgrade into a room with a terrace complete with lounge chairs and umbrella, which we did not even ask for. The rooms are large by European standards and the bathroom had a full size tub. I really enjoyed my stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Een prima hotel, modern ingericht, zuivere kamers en een prima ontbijt. Geen geluidsoverlast ondanks de centrale ligging middenin het centrum aan een autovrije winkelstraat, met de metro voor de deur.

Hotel ligt midden in het centrum op de hoek van puerta del sol aan een autoloze straat waardoor je geen last hebt van lawaai/verkeer. Ingang van metrostation Sol ligt op 20 meter de winkelstraten liggen rondom hotel en ten de wijk Huertas met allemaal tapasbarretjes en uitgaansgelenheden begint direct voor het hotel. Taxi vanaf Barajas kost zo'n 25 euro en rit duurt zo'n 20 minuten. Service is uitstekend, we konden om half 10 's ochtends gelijk onze kamer op en die was keurig schoon en de bedden waren uitstekend.

Bon hôtel avec un emplacement parfait pour combiner travail et sorties au centre ville. La connection WI-FI était par contre défaillante de manière intermittente.

einfach nur super! Das Hotel war zweckmäßig eingerichtet, sauber und nicht wie anderswo mit durchgelegenen Matratzen! Der Service war nett und die ANbindung optimal!
