Overall my stay here was great for the money i paid. The only downside was the parking situation (detached daily fee parking garage) but even then, the money we spent combined was still cheaper than 1 night elsewhere on the street. We stayed for two nights and although the bathrooms were detached, we never had to wait and they were clean for the most part. It reminded me of living in a community dorm, and for the price its way worth it considering we didn't spend much time in the room. This place is perfect for people trying to save money and want to enjoy the nightlife gaslamp district has to offer because it is walking distance from all the bars and clubs. I would definitely stay there again :-)

I realized this was a hostel hotel, but the website pictures made the bathroom and bedrooms look a little nicer than what was received. When you add in that you pay $24 a day for parking, it loses some of it's value for the money. Location is great in downtown San Diego.

The front desk people were extremely friendly and helpful; however, when they gave us our first room the room had yet to be cleaned and prepared for our stay so they had to transfer us to another room. The bathrooms are communial and not very clean. The rooms have a tiny televsion and there was only a ceiling fan. I would recommend paying a little extra and get a hotel room somewhere else.

I did not appreciate to find out I had to make a down payment of $125.00 upon arrival. I did not like to find out that there was no parking in the complex. I had to pay $24.00 for overnight parking. I did not like that I had to share restrooms with others. The restrooms and shower rooms were outside the room.

It was a good plscevto stay only if you were not staying in there for and extended period of time. I only slept there for the nights I stayed and was busy the rest of the time. It's almost like a YMCA but a little better. Other people vacationing had no problem with the establishment! I would recommend it if you are looking for a cheap place to stay! The only part I didn't like was that they only cleaned your room once a week if you were staying day to day. Other than that it an alright place to camp out! Close to everything in the gaslamp district!

I think it should be clearly mentioned on the site that this hotel does not have a in-house bathroom and toilet. This is so unusual these days that it is imperative that it is layed out very clearly.

The thought of sharing a bathroom with others isn't so bad. This hotel/hostel was probably cleaner than my own bathroom in the dorms back in college. The bathroom even has hand towels and shampoo/body soap in the shower! It's near the harbor and it's a nice neighborhood. There's no parking garage, so you have to park out on the streets w/meters that begin @ 8am. and don't park in front from 3am-6am on M, W & F b/c it's street sweeping or it's a $40 fine =/

it's a YMCA- refurbished! You get your own private room- it's small- unattractive furnishings- but clean and quiet. Perfect for just needing a place to sleep. Bathrooms are down the hall- reminds me of a gym locker room- it's not the Hilton but met my needs! For less than $50 per night- can't go wrong! Great diner downstairs as well!

For someone who was not planning on spending much of any time in the room, this was perfect. The bathroom situation is very overhyped. They are individual bathrooms with shower/sink/toilet that need a key to enter. There are approximately eight or nine per floor, so I never had to wait. The room is very small, but the bed is comfortable. The only downfall is that you can hear what is going on in the hall all the time. Aside from that, I would stay there again and save money. Highly recommend it as long as you aren't expecting much!

Perfect for the one night I was in San Diego. Basic amenities and very clean. Some street and harbour noise but quiet in the hotel. I was able to use the computers in the lobby and print my boarding pass for a small fee. Easy walking to restaurants, public transportation and entertainment. No problems with sharing the bathroom.

I read all the reviews I could on this place, so I knew exactly what to expect - and I got it. It's a no frills place, more like a college dorm (thank goodness someone reminded me to bring shower shoes!). I didn't expect much, so my expectations were met. I didn't think it was comfortable walking distance to Gaslamp, though I did it. It's a clean city so it was fine walking around at night. Super close to the Amtrak/trolley/Coaster station, so that was good. Starbucks right around the corner :)

The rooms are very small but everything is extremely clean. Good location, 20 minutes walk to Gaslamp district and with a close bus stop to the airport.

Excellent, the shared kitchen was large with stainless steel appliances, the community room had a huge TV, each room had a small 19inch flat screen tv, location is walking distance to information center and bay where boats are docked. Starbucks across the street, even a YMCA in the building for a day pass for $6 (I think that was the price). Close to a 24hr large grocery store, and next to 5th street strip of bars and clubs. No need for a car. Good because there is only meter parking around the place. I loved it for the price.

Because there was only blinds on the window, I had bright light for Westin hotel across the street shinning in my room all night. I would have prefer some kind of mat on the bathroom floor. This was my first time staying in this kind of hotel and I have decided this was not my comfort level. I do think that the amenities of the refrigerator in the room was nice, and the bed was fairly comfortable for a twin size bed. I think ther room would be better suited to have hardwood floors instead of carpet.

Walked in thinking it would be a hotel, but was actually a hostel. Just needed a bed for the night so it ended up being ok. First room we were given had not been cleaned and they gave us a new room. Community bathrooms. OK if you plan to just use this for sleeping, but try not to spend anytime here.

500 West Hotel is a good choice for budget travelers who are looking for bottom dollar room rates and a location close to everything downtown. Pros: 1) Trendy style 2) Friendly staff 3) Work out facility / Business center 4) Beautiful lobby Cons: 1) Rooms are tiny hostel size 2) Community bathrooms are only borderline clean and very utilitarian 4) No way to blackout the window above the bed Though considering we stayed here on New Year's Eve night, the noise wasn't terrible but a minor nuisance. I was a little worried when earlier in the evening a group of frat boys rented a room next door to host a party, though by bed time everyone was gone. Overall, I'd consider staying here again if in a tight squeeze for money. Then again, for another $50 you can probably have a more comfortable stay at Holiday Inn.

The 500 West Hotel is the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed at. Old building (old YMCA),small room, new paint, gleaming floors & bathrooms. Excellent staff. Key-accessed individual bathrooms down the hall were only a slight inconvenience, and we were informed about them as we registered, so there was no misunderstanding. Best things: 5 blocks from the Cruise Ship Terminal, nice family restaurant, 6 blocks to a big Mall, SPARKLE CLEAN, excellent price/staff. Not fancy, but worry-free for people cruising, who can easily walk to the ship.

This is a bare bones minimalist hotel so don't go into it expecting amenities like a Marriott. That being said, it is an AMAZING minimalist hotel. Free wireless internet, excellent location just a few blocks from the convention center and ONE block from the train station are a few of the things that make this a great budget buy for the business traveler. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are in a common area (they are locked individually though and require a room key) but everything is clean and refurbished. If you need to save 100 - 200 bucks a night this is the perfect place to spend the night or two.

This is a renovated YMCA or something. The rooms are about the size of a jail cell with a window, twin bed, small desk with TV, phone and free Wi-Fi. So the internet was a bonus. This is a perfect hotel if your only intentions are to check in, sleep, check out the next morning. Its also perfect for hookers and transients....oddly enough. But the staff was pretty friendly. The bathrooms are shared. But they are individual ones. So make sure to bring some flip-flops to shower with. Not a long walk to Gaslamp District nor is it an expensive cab ride to and from the airport. ($10.00 or so one way) If you want a place for a really cheap price, and dont plan on bringing a chick home from the bar, this is a good place.

Good location, but this place is disgusting.. you will want to be running across the street to the Westin upon arrival (I know I did). The rooms are not how they appear on the advertisements, some have fans--some do not. Some have refrigerators--some do not. The showers clog and over-flow and reek of sewage. Very institutional. A nice effort, but SHOULD NOT be listed as a hotel. This is a hostel, hostel.
